Terms of Service
Last updated: February 12, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Cygn platform, including the website at cygn.me, the Cygn mobile application, and all related APIs and services (collectively, the "Service"). Cygn is built on the open-source Vouch Protocol. By accessing or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms.
1. Acceptance of Terms
By creating an identity, signing content, or otherwise using the Service, you confirm that you are at least 13 years old (or 16 in the EEA) and agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you via email or in-app notification. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
2. Description of Service
Cygn provides cryptographic identity, content signing, and provenance verification services. The Service enables you to:
- Generate and manage an Ed25519 cryptographic identity on your device.
- Sign images and other content with verifiable digital signatures, including C2PA Content Credentials.
- Verify the authenticity and provenance of signed content via QR codes and verification links.
- Build a verifiable reputation based on your signing activity.
- Integrate cryptographic identity with third-party tools via APIs and the Vouch Protocol.
3. Account and Identity
3.1 Identity Generation
When you create an identity, an Ed25519 key pair is generated and stored exclusively on your device using hardware-backed secure storage. Your private key never leaves your device and is never transmitted to our servers. A Decentralized Identifier (DID) is derived from your public key and shared with our server to associate your identity.
3.2 Account Registration
You may register an account by verifying your email address or phone number. Registration links your DID to your contact information and enables features such as sync, notifications, and subscription management.
3.3 Account Security
You are responsible for maintaining the security of your device and your cryptographic keys. If your device is lost, stolen, or compromised, your private key may be at risk. We recommend enabling biometric authentication and using the Shamir Secret Sharing key recovery feature (available on Pro and Enterprise tiers) to protect your identity.
4. User Responsibilities
You agree to:
- Provide accurate information when creating your identity and registering your account.
- Keep your cryptographic keys secure and not share your private key with unauthorized parties.
- Use the Service only for lawful purposes and not to sign, distribute, or verify content that is illegal, fraudulent, defamatory, or infringing.
- Not attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Service, except as permitted by applicable law.
- Not use the Service to impersonate others, forge signatures, or create misleading provenance records.
- Not interfere with or disrupt the Service, its servers, or networks.
5. Signing and Verification
5.1 Digital Signatures
The Service uses Ed25519 digital signatures to create cryptographically verifiable proofs of content origin and integrity. When you sign content, you create a binding cryptographic commitment that the content originated from your identity at a specific time.
5.2 C2PA Content Credentials
The Service may embed C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) content credentials directly into media files. These embedded credentials are compliant with the C2PA standard and can be verified by any C2PA-compatible tool. C2PA credentials are public by design and viewable by anyone inspecting the file.
5.3 Provenance Grades
Content is classified with a provenance grade: "Captured" (taken directly with the device camera at signing time) or "Cygned" (selected from an existing source and signed). These grades indicate the method of acquisition, not a judgment of content quality or authenticity.
5.4 Verification
Verification confirms that a digital signature is valid and was created by the stated identity. It does not guarantee the accuracy, truthfulness, or legality of the signed content itself.
6. Intellectual Property
6.1 Your Content
You retain full ownership of all content you sign using the Service. Signing content does not transfer any rights to us. We do not store your images or documents - only cryptographic hashes and metadata are transmitted to our servers.
6.2 Cygn Brand
The Cygn name, logo, visual identity, and all associated branding are the property of Cygn. You may not use the Cygn brand in a way that suggests endorsement, affiliation, or sponsorship without our prior written consent.
6.3 Vouch Protocol
The underlying cryptographic protocol is the open-source Vouch Protocol, licensed under the Apache 2.0 license. The Vouch Protocol specifications are being donated to the W3C. Your use of the Vouch Protocol is governed by its own license terms.
7. Subscription Tiers
The Service is available in three tiers:

8.4 Free Tier
The Free tier provides access to core Vouch Protocol features at no cost. Free tier features may be modified over time, but core cryptographic signing and verification will remain free.
9. Privacy
Your use of the Service is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect, use, and protect your information. By using the Service, you consent to the practices described in the Privacy Policy.
10. Disclaimers and Limitations of Liability
10.1 As-Is Service
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
10.2 No Guarantee of Infallibility
While we use industry-standard cryptographic algorithms (Ed25519) and established standards (C2PA, W3C DID), no security system is infallible. We do not guarantee that signatures cannot be compromised if your device or private key is compromised.
10.3 Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Cygn shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim arising from these Terms shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.
10.4 Third-Party Services
The Service integrates with third-party services (Stripe, Razorpay, Sentry, etc.). We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or practices of these third parties.
11. Termination
11.1 By You
You may terminate your use of the Service at any time by deleting your identity from the app or website. Deleting your identity removes your private key from your device. To request deletion of server-side data, contact privacy@cygn.me.
11.2 By Us
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service if you violate these Terms, engage in abusive behavior, or use the Service for illegal purposes. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you before termination, except where immediate action is required to protect the Service or other users.
11.3 Effect of Termination
Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases. Existing signatures and verification records remain valid and publicly accessible, as they are part of the cryptographic record. Sections 6, 10, 12, and 13 survive termination.
12. Governing Law and Disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict of law principles.
Any disputes arising from these Terms shall first be resolved through good-faith negotiation. If negotiation fails, disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. Nothing in this section prevents either party from seeking injunctive relief in a court of competent jurisdiction.
For users in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom: Nothing in these Terms affects your rights as a consumer under mandatory local law, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You may bring claims in your local courts as permitted by applicable consumer protection laws. Our Data Processing Agreement governs enterprise data processing. For data protection inquiries, contact privacy@cygn.me.
For users in the United States: Any disputes that cannot be resolved through good-faith negotiation may be submitted to binding arbitration under the rules of the American Arbitration Association, administered in accordance with its Commercial Arbitration Rules, except where prohibited by applicable law. Each party shall bear its own costs of arbitration.
California residents: See our Privacy Policy for information about your rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
13. General Provisions

- Severability: If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
- Waiver: Our failure to enforce any provision of these Terms does not constitute a waiver of that provision.
